beach. day 1. post #1.

  • Sep 8, 2007
  • Post a comment

got in around 4 a.m. dogs have been fairly good so far. forgot willow's food, pretty sure they won't have it down here. found that she's great off-leash. chester, however, is not. saw more deer on the way down than i've ever seen. glad they didn't throw themselves in front of my car. there are a ridiculous amount of stars in the sky. the dogs keep getting sand burrs in their pads.

a random thing that made me happy:

i was sitting in traffic this a.m., being all flustered about being late to work (again). i'd been in the car for about 30min. at that point, and traveled about 2.5 miles. well, i look up and the guy in the car in front of me is ROCKING OUT. i mean, waving his hands all around, clinching his fists, doing jazz hands, and jumping around in his seat so enthusiastically that his car was actually rocking back and forth. i know i'm making it sound like he had a seizure, but this was truly someone that was happy to be alive, awake, and listening to whatever it was he was listening to. he ended up turning out of traffic just when i was about to get out, knock on his car window, and thank him for making me smile this morning. damn, i wish i had a video camera.

What family member do you most aspire to be like?  Why?
Submitted by MalieKai.

my little sister laura, who i call "laah" (because i have 2 sisters named laura). she's always been good-natured and popular, pretty and skinny. all of these things rolled into one package = beautiful. i always envied her, as she made amazing friendships which she held closer to her almost than family. plus, as part of her "hippiness", she was so positive and laid-back (unless she was around me, then she turned into a royal bitch, hahaha). i used to envy her so much, in fact, that i kind of disliked her. or at least, i didn't trust her. sure, she said her life was hard, but come on.... our mom paid for her school and living expenses, she was getting her graduate degree (something it seems like i will never afford to do, and i will always be held back for), she had a nicer wedding than me (yeah, petty. but it was ridiculous, the disparity), she was doing what she wanted by living in asheville, etc. i always felt like she was extremely lucky compared to me. in fact, casey described it as, "laura slips on a banana peel and lands on a pillow." i mean, her being pregnant was a crisis when it first happened, but maya elizabeth has turned out to be the most amazing and beautiful child i've ever seen (and no, i'm not biased). so i just assumed that laah would live her entire life like this. being positive. being skinny and beautiful. doing what she wanted, blazing a different path. making her own family.

and then, her house burned down.

as i've shared before, i was on the phone with her when it happened. i've made her recount the story with me since, so i could get some closure about how fucking scared i was. of course, i had to make it about me. but the instant it happened.... the instant that my sister was in pain, in trouble... i did what any sister would do. i freaked the fuck out. i felt so helpless, so far away. i waited by the phone for anything, any word at all. i just wanted to know that my sister, who, even though younger than me was far stronger, was okay.

and of course, it all turned to guilt. i felt so horrible for all the things i'd said, all the thoughts i've had about her having things better than me. as i've mentioned here before, i would never, EVER wish this kind of tragedy on anyone. it was horrible.

anyway, i look up to my sister. she has more strength than i have in one of my toes. she is amazing, beautiful, has produced the most awesome child i've ever met, and she's still pretty positive about a situation that might have sent me over the edge.

so laah, this one's for you. i never used to tell you i loved you, but now i do. and i mean it.

What are your favorite weird food combinations?
Submitted by Dulce.

i know it's crazy, but my dad used to have one of those sandwich press things (before the nice panini presses of today) and he used to make grilled peanut butter and cheddar sandwiches. i thought they sounded disgusting, but one day i went out on a limb and tried one. OH MY GOD, it was unbelievable. highly recommended.

also, not a combination but something weird: i used to be known for eating whole cans of old el paso refried beans with sausage (which i don't even think they make anymore) in high school. them shits was gooooooooooooood.
